Tottenham Hotspur return to the Champions League group stage for the first time in three seasons, following dalliances with lower-tier European competitions in the past couple of campaigns, and Marseille lie in wait on Wednesday evening.
Spurs overhauled north London rivals Arsenal to pinch fourth spot in the 2021-22 Premier League final standings, earning a return to Europe’s top table, and they will look to make the most of a winnable group that also contains Sporting Lisbon and Eintracht Frankfurt.
Antonio Conte’s troops have made an impressive start to the season, unbeaten in the Premier League after six games – with four wins and two draws to their name – as captain Harry Kane once again leads the charge.
Marseille have begun their Ligue 1 campaign in similarly impressive fashion however, as a 1-1 draw at Brest last month is their only dropped points and Igor Tudor’s men will be confident of getting a result at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Follow all the action as Spurs look to continue a promising start to the season in their opening Champions League fixture:
Tottenham 0-0 Marseille
21 mins: Good defending by Emerson Royal. Tavares glides forward, skips past a lazy leg dangled out by Bentancur but, as he reaches the edge of the area, Royal slides from behind and hooks the ball away.
Spurs are having the play dictated to them at the minute which will be a frustration for Antonio Conte. Nuno Tavares looks like a completely different (read: competent) player to the one we saw at Arsenal last year.

Tottenham 0-0 Marseille
19 mins: Gerson finds Suarez with a nice ball forward and Marseille win the attacking throw-in. Nuno Tavares opts to take aim from distance and Lloris dives but it’s comfortably wide.

Tottenham 0-0 Marseille
18 mins: Richarlison strides forward but his attempted ball through to Kane is cut out. Bentancur then shanks a pass out of play. There’s definitely space in behind Marseille to exploit but Spurs just haven’t managed to so far.
At the other end, the visitors are looking fairly blunt despite their possession.

Tottenham 0-0 Marseille
15 mins: Almost disaster for Marseille! Goalkeeper Pau Lopez dallies on the ball and Son is agonisingly close to nicking the ball off him but he just about manages to turn the South Korean despite stumbling and gets the ball safely to a defender.
Given the goalkeeping calamities we’ve seen recently, Lopez may want to be more careful.

Tottenham 0-0 Marseille
14 mins: Joey Barton – current Bristol Rovers manager (although more pertinently, former Marseille loanee) is in the crowd with the Marseille fans because of course he is…
Spurs win a corner that Son whips in but he fails to clear the first man and Guendouzi heads clear. Poor.

Tottenham 0-0 Marseille
12 mins: Lloris opts to go long from a goal kick and Perisic does really well to keep the ball in play and flick it inside to Son. But he’s quickly closed down by Marseille, who win the ball back. The press from the visitors has been impressive and they’re starting to dominate possession.
A speculative cross from Mbemba is overhit though and that’s symptomatic of the struggles the French side have had to hurt Spurs despite seeing plenty of the ball.

Tottenham 0-0 Marseille
10 mins: Dier goes through the back of Suarez on halfway and gets a talking to from the referee. Guendouzi was right in the referee’s ear – there’ll be no love lost between the ex-Arsenal man and Spurs tonight!
Marseille enjoy a spell of possession in the Spurs half but the hosts are well-structured and the attack peters out.

Tottenham 0-0 Marseille
8 mins: Kane gets half a yard of space in the left channel but is closed down well by Mbemba and forced out of play. Marseille look happy to push up so far and leave Spurs 4 vs 4 in attack. Could be something to exploit there for the hosts.

Tottenham 0-0 Marseille
5 mins: Kane tries a raking cross-field ball to Emerson Royal but it’s just cut out. Spurs looking comfortable on the ball in the early going and defensively disciplined.
At the other end, Clauss takes aim from long range but his shot is well blocked and Spurs can clear.

Tottenham 0-0 Marseille
2 mins: Decent start for Spurs as they have a spell of possession in the Marseille half but Son’s neat flick through is well intercepted. Marseille stroke the ball about at the back as they try to gain a foothold.
